Sheffield’s largest Lunar New Year celebration yet will take place from February 9th – February 13th.
Beginning in 2004, the festivities showcase the cultural richness of Sheffield, whilst supporting the important work of The Children’s Hospital Charity. The five-day festival will feature an array of events, with something for everyone – here are five you shouldn’t miss.
Peace Gardens street parade and food festival
Over the weekend, the Peace Gardens in the centre of Sheffield will become a cultural hub, with over 35 stalls selling street food, art, and more. The nearby Winter Garden will have a 15-metre-long dragon installed on the 8th of February.
From 10am – 6pm on the 10th and 11th of February, the family-friendly events will feature a huge dragon as the centrepiece, with a dragon parade, performances and speeches taking place on the Sunday. All of these events are completely free to attend.
Dragon light switch-on at Sheffield Children’s Hospital
The Children’s Hospital Charity will be celebrating by illuminating a 5-metre dragon on the hospital’s Outpatient’s Department, overlooking Clarkson Street. The dragon, which is sponsored by community groups, local businesses and individuals, symbolises the collective spirit of Sheffield’s community. Last year’s event raised over £13,000 – the illuminations will begin at 5pm on the 9th of February.
Cultural performances at the Octagon Centre
An evening of cultural performances at the University of Sheffield’s Octagon Centre will be taking place on the 10th of February, with a night of traditional dragon dancing, singing and various performances, embodying the spirit of Chinese cultural heritage. This event is ticketed, with prices starting at £15. Tickets can be purchased here.
China Red charity banquet auction
The China Red restaurant will be hosting a banquet on the 13th of February from 6pm, with an auction in support of charity. The event will support local causes, combining celebrations with philanthropy.
Speech from the Lord Mayor and city leaders
On the 11th of February, Colin Ross, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, will be initiating the festivities alongside fellow community leaders.
The event is spearheaded by Jerry Cheung, MD at New Era Development Ltd. Speaking on the festival, he said: “This event is about culture sharing and bringing communities together. It’s also a chance to support a noble cause – raising funds for Sheffield Children’s.”
Diane Jarvis of Sheffield BID expressed excitement at the upcoming events, saying the “extension to the city centre is a fantastic addition to Sheffield’s major events calendar”.
Councillor Martin Smith pointed out the festival’s significance in celebrating Chinese culture and its symbolism of good fortune, strength and success.
