The Lord Mayor of Sheffield celebrates 1 year of having honest conversations on mental health and masculinity.
Men up North is a Sheffield-based support group run by social entrepreneur Angga Kara. Angga is a resilience and mindfulness coach, TEDx speaker and creative consultant. The repercussions of suicide are something that has hit Angga personally and upon research, the realisation is that it’s an epidemic. Statistics show that 75% of suicides are men, yet only 36% of therapy referrals within the NHS are from men. This needs amending.
There are pressures of being a man in the 21st century and unfortunately because of this, men suffer a lot with opening up. The main aim of the group is to bring awareness, support and an empathetic ear to the men of Sheffield who are suffering in silence.
In celebration of their one year anniversary, last month’s ‘Can we Talk’ session was located at Savill’s barbers in order to obtain a casual atmosphere. The popular sessions bring an array of men from ages 21-58, from different cultural and social backgrounds.
Men up North hold monthly ‘Can we Talk’ sessions which are often fully booked with a waiting list. If you’d like to find out more about attending one of their talks, visit their site below;
