Devonshire Green is set to once again become Sheffield’s football home from home, with Fan City preparing for a return during the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Organisers have confirmed plans to bring the popular outdoor fan zone back to the city centre if England progress to the quarter-finals, following the huge crowds seen during the Three Lions’ run to the Euro 2024 final.

Before that can happen, Thomas Tuchel’s side must first overcome DR Congo in today’s Round of 32 tie. Victory would set up a last-16 meeting with Mexico, in Mexico City, with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.

Should England make it through those tests, Fan City will screen every remaining World Cup match from the quarter-final stage onwards – with the exception of the second quarter-final, which kicks off at 2am UK time.

An official Fan City spokesperson said: “Sheffield has always turned out for big football occasions and we know there will be huge demand for somewhere supporters can come together to watch the game.

“If England reach the quarter-finals, we’ll be ready to welcome fans back to Devonshire Green for what we hope will be another memorable night. We’ll also be open for all of the matches from the quarters. Fingers crossed we make it all the way to the final this year!”

As with previous editions, the city centre site will feature giant outdoor screens, food and drink vendors and a festival-style atmosphere, bringing together supporters from across South Yorkshire to watch the biggest matches of the tournament.

Sheffield City Council has also welcomed the plans. Ben Miskell, Chair of the Economic Development, Skills and Culture Policy Committee, said the fan zone offers “the perfect opportunity” for supporters to experience the tournament together, while encouraging those attending to be mindful of nearby residents during the later evening kick-offs.

Beyond the football itself, organisers say Fan City also provides a welcome boost for city centre businesses, helping drive footfall for bars, restaurants and hospitality venues during major international tournaments.

Further information on opening times, ticketing and the full Fan City programme will be announced should England secure their place in the quarter-finals.

For now, all eyes are on today’s clash with DR Congo. If England can come through that test and then overcome Mexico in the last 16, Sheffield will once again be gearing up for another unforgettable summer of football at Fan City.
