Spotlight on: The Style Bar
Exposed fashion blogger Kate Mitchell checks out The Style Bar.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll have spent evenings getting ready for a night out when your hair just refuses to do what it’s told. I tend to find I can’t get it to curl how I want it to, or I’ll have grand plans for a gorgeous up-do – but end up with arm ache in a sea of hair grips trying to sort it out. So, I was intrigued when Exposed sent me to check out new salon, The Style Bar, the first American style ‘blow-out’ bar to open in Sheffield.
The concept is relatively new over here – a salon dedicated to blow-drys and hair styles rather than merely traditional cuts and colours. For any occasion when you need to look your best, you can choose a style and head out looking like you hired a personal stylist. It seemed too good to be true, so I decided to put them to the test.
I was greeted by managers Ben and Cherise – and then by the salon’s mascots, gorgeous pug dogs Ronnie and Reggie, who came trotting up to welcome me! The first thing that struck me was how luxurious it all felt; rows of white leather chairs around the main bay, (for creating those glamourous up-do’s I find so tricky) flanked by a decadent selection of drinks lined up on the mini-bar, a flat screen TV and a wall of professional products. I was shown to one of the blow-dry seats for a chat with Henry, my stylist for the afternoon, and placed my drink order – just a pot of tea for me, but there’s also bubbly if you want to really pamper yourself.
I perused the cheeky blow-dry ‘menu’ and was impressed by the range of styles on offer – each one accompanied by a little illustration of the finished look. There seemed to be something to satisfy everyone’s hair dreams; from the boho fishtail plait, to the timeless glamour of a ‘High Society’ in the style of Audrey Hepburn. I loved the inventive selection, and decided on ‘Vintage Hollywood ’- think Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge era.
First though, Henry wanted to give me a taste of the classic ‘blow-out’ – and I was amazed to see my stubborn mane being teased into a gorgeous sleek style with Bardot-esque volume at the roots. Henry then set about transforming me again. He carefully curled all my hair (a treat for someone like me who can only successfully do the front) and then secured it with hairspray – before leaving me to relax with my tea and Baileys chocolates as the curls set.
Henry then gently brushed out the curls to reveal shining Hollywood waves that I’ve never been able to achieve myself – despite my best efforts.
With my hair looking as glamourous as the menu promised, I went through to their sister salon, the newly opened Nail Bar, to complete my afternoon of pampering. Nail technician Rebecca showed me the nail menu and I decided on an elegant UV gel polish in shell pink. I don’t take as much care of my nails as I should, so having my cuticles done was a treat in itself. The gel polish went on perfectly smooth and shiny, and lasts up to four weeks. For any nail-novices like me, it instantly makes your digits look classy if you like to keep them fairly short.
Both the Nail and Style Bar aim to create an atmosphere of affordable luxury and give you a taste of the celebrity lifestyle. I certainly felt they achieved this – and I’ll definitely be stopping by again soon to try something else off the menu.
The Style Bar also offers cutting, finishing and colour treatments as well as styling for men. The salon is available for a variety of occasions including private parties and brides-to-be, and has two late night openings a week, on Thursday and Friday until 8pm.
