Mixposed #1: Tino @ The Foundry
The hotly-tipped Tino opens up our Mixposed series in style.
A brand new series showcasing the hottest DJs and producers from all corners of dance music filmed live at our favourite Steel City venues, the inaugural instalment of Mixposed launched last month.
To set the bar accordingly, we collared one of the most exciting names in grime, dubstep and UK Funky, Tino, to play an exclusive mix at the home of renowned underground club night The Tuesday Club. After spinning a power hour of fire tunes at the Foundry, we caught up with the artist to see what’s new.
What’s good, Tino? Thanks for a killer mix!
No, thanks for having me! I love TTC and rate Exposed a lot, so biggups for getting me involved in this series.
Is Tuesday Club one of your favourite club-nights to play at?
Yeah definitely, they cater to most genres throughout the year and it’s always packed and a good vibe. The sound system guys work really hard too so it’s a pleasure to play on their system, it’s definitely one of the best in Sheffield. What did you aim to showcase with your Mixposed mix?
I’ve started incorporating some dark, techno-y bits in my sets so was excited to demonstrate how much the likes of Madam X and Swamp 81 have influenced the tunes I play. I feel like I’ve finally found a way of incorporating the variety of sounds and scenes that I love into my sets, so I’m gassed that Mixposed has given me the opportunity to do this in such a visual way! 80% of the stuff I play is from producers I rate, who I believe are unrepresented within their scenes, and who I chat with regularly online or at events.
So you’ve been booked at Fabric? Huge!
Yeah, I’ve been booked to play at Fabric this month with my new fave b2b partner, Bethbethbeth. I’m hyped. I played with her and Riko Dan on Rinse FM, which was sick, and it was on my birthday. Oh, and we played after Kahn & Neek at St Paul’s carnival in Bristol – one of my favourite sets ever.
You’ll be on the decks at Tuesday Club this Tuesday 18th September at their massive Freshers Carnival, who are you looking forward to playing with?
Obviously the whole lineup is banging but Kyrist is absolutely smashing it in drum ’n’ bass right now, and I’ve heard she’s been working on some dubstep so will be so lovely to play alongside her. Jamz Supernova has also always been one of my big inspirations, I can’t really believe I’m on the same lineup as her. Also a load of really sick up and comers are playing in room 2 like Thompson UK and Luna, so the whole night is just gonna be all round fab!
What have been your favourite TTCs?
All of them have had their own “best bits” but supporting and then chatting with the garage don Wookie was one of my fav nights there. Also one time when I supported taiku nulight and klose one they came back to mine for a mix, and they were such sound and supportive guys it just rounded off the whole night! Another sick one was when my brand Peachy Events did a room 2 takeover, I was so proud of everyone who played and that TTC let us host!
You’ve had so much on since your last interview with us back in May. Things are moving fast!
Yeah, everything has been a bit mad! I had the opportunity to play on BBC 1Xtra on Toddla T’s show when he did a pop-up carnival in Sheffield with DJ Target. The whole show was streamed live and is deffo worth checking out! It was a really good showcase of the diversity and talent of music in Sheffield that’s influenced a lot of my tastes. Marcus Nasty also let me host his show on Rinse FM, I was really nervous about chatting on the mic but I loved doing it.
We’ve heard that your club night, Peachy, is stepping up a notch too.
Yes, we’ve got loads of new stuff coming up, and we’re doing a re-brand. I’ve brought through my gal Lila as our creative director. She’s doing so much to expand the brand and I love working with her, so expect to see a lot more from Peachy over the next few months. Anyone wanting to do a guest mix for us please get in touch – we want to give people a platform to promote themselves. Can you give us some insight into the artists you played in this mix?
I play tunes from Aztek in every set and there are a few bits from him in this mix. Not only is he insane at production, but he’s also one of my best friends, so I love playing his tunes. Proper dark, heavy dubstep with really nice melodies – check him out! I’ve also dropped some tracks from Muhla, a Bristol-based producer who’s the main man of the label Too Much Collective. A lot of them have kind of oriental vibes – give him a listen too, and check out the label.
I’ve got a new track in here from Aaee – also a Bristol-based producer – who’s getting really big in the UK funky scene right now, even Skream has been playing his tunes. He’s had a release on Rhythm Athletic, a new label from Murder He Wrote, and I can tell some big tracks are gonna be coming through on that label. Aaee often makes tracks with his pal Fonzo; I’ve included one of Fonzo’s own tunes in this mix too. There are many more artists, but I’ve included the tracklist so people can look them all up.
