Sheffield’s Harry Maguire scores in World Cup quarter final, becomes meme
From Mosborough to Moscow, Harry Maguire has gone on a remarkable journey over the last few years. From starting his career at Sheffield United in 2011 and making his England debut in 2017, to scoring in a World Cup quarter final, sending his country to its first semi final since 1990. Arguably though, it’s his transition into an internet meme which is the high point so far.
Just after scoring against Sweden on Saturday (7 July), Harry was pictured talking to long-term girlfriend and fellow Sheffielder Fern Hawkins. Fern was gushing with pride whilst Harry played it cool. Very cool. Twitter took care of the rest, with team-mate and Sheffield-born Kyle Walker even wading with on the memes. To be honest, I preferred the earlier Harry Maguire memes, I lost interest when they started to become popular' pic.twitter.com/XxtvdzEBGH
