Sheffield Cathedral to mark second National Day of Reflection with special Memorial Service

English cathedrals across the nation are joining together to mark the National Day of Reflection on Wednesday 23 March – the second anniversary of the first Covid-19 lockdown.

The day is being coordinated by the charity Marie Curie to support the millions of people who have been bereaved during the pandemic and reflect on the lives of those we’ve lost. A special memorial service will take place at Sheffield Cathedral at 5pm.

“For the past few weeks people have been dropping into Sheffield Cathedral to record their memories of the last couple of years on our Wall of Remembrance” says The Very Reverend Abi Thompson, Dean of Sheffield Cathedral, “Wednesday 23rd March marks the second anniversary of the first Covid Lockdown in this country, and at 5.00pm we are holding a Service of Remembrance at Sheffield Cathedral to mark this life-changing moment in our history.

“All are welcome to come and take part in this service where there will be music, readings, prayers and lots of quiet space to reflect on the people we have loved and lost over the past two years and the chaos that the Covid pandemic has brought to our lives.”

People from across Sheffield and South Yorkshire have been honouring and remembering family, friends and colleagues who died during the pandemic by adding their names to a special Wall of Remembrance and a Memorial Book which will remain open until 30 October.

At the end of October, the traditional time of year for remembering those we have lost, the Cathedral will be holding a further memorial service to enable the community to come together to mourn those we have lost over the past few years.
