Old Coroner’s Court to be demolished

The Old Cononer’s Court on Nursery Street is set to be demolished to make way for a new build apartment block, Exposed can reveal.

A planning application was submitted in 2015 for refurbishment of the building, creating a mixed used development including 42 apartments, a ground floor retail space and an emphasis on retaining the building’s character.

Speaking to Exposed, CODA Studios managing director David Cross explains why that ultimately wasn’t possible. “Upon closer inspection, the design was un-viable given the increases in build costs and the complexity of the design.

“The Old Coroner’s Court isn’t listed and it isn’t a conservation area, so in theory we can knock it down. We have made an application to this effect and we hope to submit a full new build planning application very soon. The new plans will respect the local vernacular and create a suitable building for this great riverside location.”

David added: “This is a great location and one prime now for regeneration considering the success of Kelham Island. It’s always sad to lose old buildings but rest assured we have tried to find a solution that works but as with almost every job in the city, viability is the major factor.”
