Eccy Road’s Napoleons Casino to be turned into bar and gym

The so-far-unnamed developers who snapped up Ecclesall Road’s Napoleons Casino last year have submitted a planning request to the council to turn the venue into a bar and restaurant, with a gym based in the basement.

Plans were submitted by the proposed architect, Axis Architecture, the company behind the renovation of the former headquarters of the National Union of Miner’s building in the city centre of Sheffield.

The plans outline a ground floor restaurant and bar which extends to a mezzanine, similar to the layout of the old casino. Downstairs in the basement, where the actual slots  were based, could be turned into a large gym. The gym’s separate entrance will be on the right, with the restaurant and bar’s entrance on the left.

The property was bought for less than the asking price of £850,000, the Star reported back in December. Commercial agent Martin Crosthwaite said at the time:  “The buyers could split it horizontally into a gym on the lower ground and a bar and restaurant on the ground and mezzanine level. They plan short term to let it as it is. Long term it could be dropped and redeveloped as residential, although high rise is inappropriate there.

“The new Sainsbury’s local further up has two floors of residential above. Along with plans for the Gilders site, it shows people have confidence in Banner Cross.”
