A Bird Friendly Brew
The Sheffield coffee experts over at Cafeology have been recognised at the 2015 Animal Hero Awards for its contribution to the protection of the Central American rainforest. Over 2000 businesses were nominated for the award and Cafeology made it into the top three in the Outstanding Business of the Year category – a category that looks to reward any business that makes animal welfare a top consideration in its business practices.
Cafeology was put forward for the award for its introduction of a bird friendly coffee initiative which promotes the need for more sustainable coffee plantations. Research shows that this makes all the difference; whilst an ordinary plantation harbours just 61 species of birds, this number jumps to 243 when coffee is cultivated under a canopy of ten tree species or more.
Bryan Unkles, Cafeology founder and director, was humbled to be put forward for the award and said “the environment has been at the forefront of our practices since we started the company in 2003. With this project we wanted to help protect migratory birds after hearing about how destructive some coffee farming can be to their natural habitats.”
