2016: Saint or Sinner?

Ah, January… a month of tough decisions.
The festive holidays have passed and it turns out – apparently – that this means it’s no longer socially acceptable to polish off a selection box before breakfast or swig a bottle of port until gout sets in. Next it’s your hectic social schedule that takes a hit and family members start to look at you questioningly each time you reach into the fridge for that beer/pork pie/yule log while nonchalantly proclaiming, ‘Oh well, it’s Christmas!’
It’s not. It’s January. And you’re left with a right ol’ dilemma on your hands: is it time to fix up and look sharp? Or do you carry on regardless?
Whether you choose to go down the righteous path of fitness, wellbeing and vitality, or opt to keep the party going with another naughty month of self-indulgence, we’ve got both sides covered with our Saint or Sinner guide to New Year in Sheffield!
So, dear reader, what will it be? Don’t worry, we won’t judge…

What is it? Momentum Leisure Club on St Georges Close (opal 2) offers up a wide variety of facilities for exercise, relaxation and recovery. With a swimming pool, steam room and sauna, regular classes like HIIT, LBT, boxing, circuits and abs – as well as a gym boasting a range of new equipment (squat rack and weights, dip/pull-up station, 2 olympic bars and kettle bells), there are so many ways to keep fit here. Pop in to see all of the facilities for yourself.
What are the benefits? With personal training in both 1hr or more affordable ½ hr sessions, you’ll get all of the motivational assistance you need without the costly price tag!

Roller DerbyRoll With It
What is it? Roller Derby is a fast-paced, full contact team sport played on roller-skates. The aim of the game is to get one of your players – the jammer – to lap as many opposition players as possible. The only problem is that the opposition are trying to do the same thing whilst being able to block your jammer, so in effect both teams play offense and defence simultaneously. Got it?
What are the benefits? It’s a fun sport that gives a full aerobic workout, just be prepared to pick up some bumps and bruises on the way. Both Sheffield teams pride themselves on inclusivity so people of any ability are encouraged to give it a go.
How much? The first session with the Inhuman League is free while Sheffield Steel Rollergirls regularly have new intake sessions, also free.

What are the benefits? Running is the easiest sport to take up – there’s no expensive equipment needed, all you have to do is pop on a pair of trainers and get going. Even if you’re a super-slow jogger, you’ll burn at least 10 calories per minute of running. By signing up for an event like the half marathon it gives you something to aim towards meaning you’re more likely to keep your motivation and fitness levels up.
How much? General entry for the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon is £28. Some good, free running routes can be found on

What are the benefits? Upper body strength and core muscles will get a really good workout and you’ll use more complex moves than on a traditional climbing wall when tackling the higher graded routes.
