William Barstow – The Hummingbird EP

The Hummingbird is a four track EP by Manchester-based artist William Barstow. He was originally one of our own before relocating slightly further north, playing many of Sheffield’s favourite haunts such as The Harley, The Great Gatsby and The Riverside whilst slowly building up a name for himself.

William has had a great first half of 2015 having supported Slow Club and playing Tramlines festival, so now seems the perfect time for him to release his debut EP. On The Hummingbird the singer-songwriter plays four stripped back songs which blend aspects of acoustic blues and folk. The lyrics generally focus on tales of unrequited love and loss whilst his guitar playing tends towards a stripped back folk style with the occasional bluesy guitar twang thrown in.

Recorded in the comfortable settings of Manchester’s Blueprint Studios, the music invokes a very intimate feeling which lends an almost live quality to the EP. Across the whole EP he uses very bare-boned instrumentation which focuses more on the rhythmic strumming of his guitar and vocals, allowing for raw emotion to shine through during the four tracks.

Overall, Hummingbird is a promising debut for an up-and-coming solo artist. Catch him when he next returns to the Steel City!
