Paolo Nutini – Caustic Love

Listening to the Scotsman’s new album transports you back to the funk and soul wonder years of Motown classics – but with some sultry R&B twists. Vocally, ‘Caustic Love’ is a world apart from the warbling sound of ‘These Streets’ and is complimented enormously by swaggering bass lines and string accompaniments.

I can certainly see why Paolo’s performance of the album at London’s Boston Arms, complete with his crackerjack ten-piece band, went down a storm. For me, this album works like a preview to what I can imagine would be an extraordinary live show.

Highlights include a re-working of Betteye LaVette’s blues classic ‘Let me Down Easy’ and the sublime ‘One Day’. Whether a fan or not, I urge you to have a listen, sit back and enjoy the transformation that Paolo Nutini has gone through in the making of this album.
