REVIEW: Warframe

Perhaps one of the most bland and repetitive third-person shooters of late, Warframe doesn’t bring anything new to the table, which can be forgivable as it’s completely free-to-play. However, that doesn’t stop this game leaving you feeling bored and disengaged throughout.

The narrative is a bit all over the place, but you’re essentially put into these battlesuits known as Warframes, which enable a regular human to turn into a fighting machine, equipped with all sorts of abilities and weaponry. Pitting you against a whole host of strange enemies including cyborgs, aliens and droids, Warframe offers plenty of combat but no real sense of satisfaction.

Each Warframe comes with its own strengths and weaknesses, for example one could give you much more health as opposed to another which might increase your shields but lessen your maximum health. Taking on enemies requires a combination of melee weapons, guns and various abilities, which for full effect should be used strategically to quickly and efficiently get rid of enemies. Experimenting with different Warframes and weapons is encouraged in order to find the perfect setup that suits your playstyle.

Generally fast-paced, you can wall run, grab onto almost any ledge and run at high speeds, which at first feels like a lot of fun but once you realise the whole game is essentially doing the same thing over and over again with little to no substance, you’ll soon find yourself getting bored very quick. The biggest flaw is the amount of glitches – one scenario had me on a rescue mission in which I had to guide the prisoner back to a safe location, however he got stuck in a wall, effectively forcing me to restart the mission, losing all my progress. Bah…

There’s plenty of missions to bore yourself with and still a generally large population of online players, but ultimately Warframe doesn’t offer much other than a couple hours worth of gameplay. After that, things get stale, even at the later stages of the game. Free is just the right amount for this game.
