A brand new vegan and gluten-free cake shop is set to open in Sharrow Vale in autumn.
Baked by Pearl Bakery, a venture by Sarah Shooter who runs Pearl Bakery from home, will join the ever-growing vegan scene in Sheffield.
Speaking to Exposed, Sarah said: “It’s all vegan and gluten free. Cakes, donuts, milkshakes – anything bad for you, basically!”
Sarah was a teacher in Essex until two years ago when she made the move to Sheffield. Her foray into vegan baking came almost accidentally. “When I moved here, I didn’t want to go back into teaching so when I was at home with my daughter, I started baking.
“My daughter can’t have dairy and I have a wheat intolerance, so I just made the decision to be vegan. I baked a few cakes for Pom Kitchen and it went from there. I was contacted by other businesses, like Urban Ita on Abbeydale Road, and was taking private orders too.”
Discussing the vegan scene, Sarah talks about why she’s expanding her brand into a café. “The vegan scene is huge in Sheffield. It just doesn’t exist in Essex. But it isn’t just that; a woman came up to me at the Nether Edge market recently and asked me to make a donut for her daughter. She told me she had an egg allergy and that she’d never had a donut before – things like that make me so happy!”
What can we expect from the bakery? “We’ll be doing our signature crumble slices, our layer cakes but we can’t say too much right now. It’s going to be something a little bit different!”
Baked by Pearl Bakery will open in autumn on Hickmott Road, between Sharrow Vale and Ecclesall Road. Head over to Pearl Bakery’s Facebook for more information.
