Italian Express New Menu
Serving up the freshest authentic Italian cuisine, Italian Express in Walkley breaks the mould when it comes to fast food joints. Recently re-vamping their menu, Exposed was invited along to sample some of their wares and find out more about their involvement in the newly launched Pending Coffee movement.
It’s a tight squeeze in the cosy Italian Express as family, friends and press are enjoying glasses of prosecco and supping Kir Royales whilst eagerly awaiting the arrival of the food – and that’s one thing that makes this place stand out from your usual takeaway outlets: they’re licensed, meaning it’s the ultimate one stop shop providing all the makings of a perfect cosy night in. The food begins to peter out from the kitchen and we’re treated to deliciously crispy arancini balls – which are deep fried rice with porcini mushrooms, mozzarella and tomato. We also try the uova fiorentina, which is oven baked spinach, tomato and egg topped with mozzarella and – my favourite yet – parmigiana, a pan-fried aubergine dish layered with mozzarella, Parmesan and topped with a tomato basil sauce before being oven baked. We also chow down on homemade pizza, bruschetta and sweet potato croquettes, which I can’t recommend more.
Sampling a mere selection of the starters and appetisers on offer, after perusing the menu it’s clear this is just the tip of the iceberg. With an extensive vegetarian menu, an under 500 calorie menu, as well as plenty of gluten free options, they cater for everyone here, including those who are less fortunate. One of the first to sign up to the Pending Coffee movement, you can pop into Italian Express for a cup of proper Italian coffee and purchase a ‘pending’ one at the same time. This can then be claimed later by a homeless, elderly or vulnerable person in need of a hot drink and a safe, friendly place to relax for a bit.
They also support Cavendish Cancer Care, donating 10% of their profits to the Sheffield charity on Monday and Tuesday nights.
A family affair, Kym Hall runs the business with her father, the chef, who cooks up delicious dishes inspired by the cuisine from his hometown of Sorrento, which he frequently visits. Charming, authentic and with undeniably good food, give Italian Express a whirl next time you not in the mood for cooking – and if your order is over £30 on food, they’ll throw a bottle of wine in for free! Winner.
