Uni-Arms

Food Review: The University Arms

Exposed went down to the University Arms to sample its top notch pub grub

The Place
Tucked away behind Brook Hill roundabout, The University Arms and its gem of a beer garden serves as a popular summer destination for both students and locals in the steel city; but the real ale hotspot also provides great sanctuary during the winter months, offering a range of hearty pub dishes alongside their ever-changing line-up of guest beers. Stepping from the cold into the cosy pub surroundings, we were greeted warmly by the bar staff and found a table.

The Food
After a recent revamp of their lunchtime and evening menus, served 12-3pm and 3-8pm respectively, there’s now a healthy range of mains, sharers, sides and desserts on offer, consisting largely of traditional pub classics such as fish and chips, homemade pies and burgers – plus, I’m happy to report, no pulled pork in sight! I opted for the British pub staple of fish and chips, while my partner chose the chicken and bacon melt – accompanied by another round of local ales, First Light American Pale and Farmers Blonde, for good measure.
The food arrived in good time and the portions were plentiful; mine a large 10oz cod fillet in crispy beer batter sided with a generous helping of chunky cut chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce. The batter was nice and crunchy and the flaky fish inside cooked perfectly, while tangy tartare sauce and lashings of Henderson’s Relish reaffirmed the simple yet scrumptious status of the dish. The chicken and smoked bacon melt came covered in melted cheddar cheese and drenched in a sweet hickory barbeque sauce, providing perfect dipping opportunities for the chunky chips.
Stuffed but still tempted by the dessert menu, we chose to share a chocolate cookie ice cream cake which provided a sweet, chocolatey end to the evening.

The Verdict
Simple but classy British dishes done well, The University Arms blends tradition and taste perfectly, showing its ability to cater to food-lovers just as well as the beer aficionados.
