Top 5 Games of All Time

The gaming industry has improved immensely over the last two decades. We now have games with sophisticated graphics good enough to challenge what we know as reality. We’re now in the age of immersive gaming technology with advanced physical ergonomics allowing a user to play for an extended period without risk of causing physical damage to the body. Games are getting more technical, so only people with a good IQ can play them successfully.

However, we can’t forget the humble beginnings – from the Magnavox Odyssey of 1972, the APF TV Fun of 1976, and Atari’s Home Pong of 1975 – these games built the foundation for what we have today as HD gaming consoles.

The gaming industry has also improved to a level where gamers are now going a step further than just getting entertainment from playing. Esports competitions now bring professional gamers together to compete for cash prizes. More so, spectators can bet on their preferred gamer through modern-day sportsbooks with established preseason on betting.co.uk – a sportsbooks review platform.

While that’s the case, there are some indications that point industry is getting even better – with the emergence of web3.0 and the metaverse concept; there’s no telling what the future holds for gamers. However, before that happens, let’s reflect on some of the best games of all time – the games we look back on to feel assured that there’s something much more advanced on the way.

5 Best Games of All Time

The gaming industry is over 50 years old – since its inception, countless games have been released, most of which have drawn a lot of appreciation from the crowd. The list below has filtered releases by series, emphasising specific series that made the entire franchise for the developers tick.

While that’s the case, games that appeared here were chosen relative to available technology at the time of release and the total gaming market relative to sales. If you don’t see your favourite game, it probably wasn’t the better game in the eyes of the crowd.

  1. The Legend of Zelda (series)

The high fantasy action-adventure video game franchise created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka takes the undisputed first position in the best game of all-time rankings. Since its first release in 1986, we’ve gotten subsequent releases that the media have lauded. Although not all of these editions were spectacular, the ones like ‘Ocarina of Time’, ‘A Link to the Past’, and ‘Breath of the Wild’ that dominated the charts during their days are enough to get the series listed.

  1. Super Mario (series)

Super Mario is a platform game created by a Japanese gaming console and software developing company, Nintendo. Also called Super Mario Bros or Mario, the series has over twenty games, making them one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world. Over 3800 million copies of the game have been sold worldwide – more evidence to show the amount of attention the series gets from the media after every release. Today, ratings from some of these titles are good enough to compete with some of the biggest game releases in recent years.

  1. Tony Hawks Pro Skater (series)

Of all the video game types in the world, a third-person skateboarding video game gets to take 3rd place. The game plot revolves around Tom Hawk, one of the greatest skateboarders of all time. During the later years of his skateboarding career, he releases a video game in partnership with Activision and Neversoft. The first title was released in 1999. Since then, there have been over 18 more titles, including spinoffs and repackages. Although the popularity of the game series seems to have died down with subsequent releases, its initial and sequel releases dominated the charts during their time.

  1. Grand Theft Auto (Series)

No list of top games of all time would be complete without adding GTA – if not the entire series, at least some titles like GTA IV, GTA V, or GTA San Andreas. The most successful series ever made by Rockstar Games is an action-adventure game where the user plays in an open world, imitating the lifestyle of a gangster, going on missions which are interconnected to complete the story. The last release, GTA V, has sold over 150 million copies, making it one of the bestselling game titles of all time.

  1. Soulcalibur (series)

Soulcalibur is a weapon-based fighting video game developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Although the initial release in 1995 was named Soul Edge, the sequel released in 1998 (Soulcalibur) went on to have six more instalments – the latest is Soulcalibur VI, released in 2018. Players live through a historical fantasy of the late 16th and 17th centuries, during the existence of an evil mythical weapon called Soul Edge, or in the case of the sequel, Soul Calibur.
