Spotlight On… Inherited
For three years, Inherited have been an essential part of Broomhill – with their sleek selection of independent clothing and a sharp eye for rare sneakers. Now, they’re making moves into the barbershop business – with Inherited Trim opening up right next door.
“It’s always been something I’ve wanted to do,” said owner Josh Bonney. “As soon as we had the chance about four months ago, we knocked through, moved the clothes and sneakers next door and got the barbers going.”
It’s a logical step for Josh, who wants to put the essentials for looking good under one roof. “Whenever I used to get my hair cut, I’d go straight out shopping and buy some new clothes. The two go together in my mind.”
The newly refurbished interior looks slick – with stark white walls and exposed brickwork – and there’s a real relaxed atmosphere inside. A big screen in the corner keeps patrons entertained with FIFA while they wait, but usually they’ll be browsing the sharp range of clothes, jewellery and sneakers parked through the archway next door.
“We stock lots of local stuff from independent stores, as well as from shops all over Europe,” continues Josh – and you can tell that he and all the staff at Inherited are passionate about what they’re selling. A customer points to a pair of trainers on the top shelf and he launches straight into an avid description, reeling off facts about the colourful pair of Puma Disc Tropicals. It’s this passion for great stock that makes Inherited stand out – while Josh makes regular trips to London’s East End on the lookout for new independent labels and exciting designs.
But now Inherited is becoming a brand in their own right – producing everything from Inherited caps and t-shirts to their own Vodka (made locally in Yorkshire), candles and iPad accessories. What’s more, while weekends have always seen Inherited get a bit more rowdy with DJs and beverages taking centre stage, now they’re hosting their own night at Soyo – dubbed Inherited Sounds happening every last Friday of the month. They’re even planning to open an ‘Inherited Food’ café a couple of doors down.
“It’s becoming a bit of an empire” Josh admits with a laugh.
