Smart, Savvy, Sassy… Legally Blonde at Sheffield Lyceum
The cult comedy film Legally Blonde was successfully transformed into a hit musical in 2007 and is finally coming to Sheffield’s Lyceum theatre, where the STOS theatre company will be performing their own rendition. The original production was a critical and commercial success receiving 10 Tony Award nominations and also winning the coveted Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
This real feel-good show is well-loved for its vibrant performances and eccentric characters. It follows the story of Elle, who follows her love Warner Huntington III to Harvard in an attempt to prove to him she can be the “serious” girlfriend he wants. However the legal knowledge Elle picks up along the way proves useful. In helping to defend her friend on trial she proves her doubters wrong.
The film seems tailor made for the transformation into a musical. Taking the lead is local actress Abi Weigold who plays Reese Witherspoon’s Elle and has previously starred in Ghost. Mark Feakins directs, with musical direction by Emma Magenty and choreography by Claire Harriott.
Legally Blonde: The Musical will be running at the Lyceum from November 17th to 21st. Tickets can be bought here.
