Sheffield Hallam graduate awarded Orchard Square art commission

Sheffield Hallam University graduate and freelance illustrator, Will Rea has been awarded the Orchard Square public art commission as part of a competition ran by the Museum of Sheffield.

The competition which was launched in August invited Sheffield artists to pitch a design based on ‘what Sheffield means to them’ to cover a space of over 15 metres in Orchard Square- the largest private ownership in Sheffield’s shopping district.

The Museum of Sheffield received over 30 entries, which was shortlisted to four applicants before Rea was chosen as their winner.

The 22-year old, who is set to start work next month described the project as an “incredible opportunity” and said that it is not only a chance for his work to be regarded as a piece of Sheffield’s ever-growing art scene, but installing this piece will allow him to give something back to Sheffield’s ever-welcoming community.

Nicola Blake, from LAP said that the art project will be “a compliment to the spirit of the initiative “after plans were announced earlier this year to develop a collection of pop-up restaurants, this autumn.
