A new baby’s arrival in the home of only-child Tim sparks a sibling rivalry, complicated by the fact that the baby wears a suit, carries a briefcase, and has a mission to stop dogs from taking over as the world’s cutest beings. The real win of The Boss Baby is that events are seen through the wonderfully unreliable eyes of 7-year old Tim, as reality seamlessly bleeds with imagination, lending a looseness and lightness to the narrative that is quite refreshing. There are some nice efforts to delve deeper into children’s psyches, and there are plenty of laughs and clever moments along the way. Ultimately, however, the formula kicks in and you are left with the sense that there was probably a much better film trying to get out under all the toilet jokes and manic action pieces.
