You Can Leave Your Fedora On – Exposed Awards 2012 Report

Da Jig Is Up!

Sure as eggs is eggs, the Exposed Awards 2012 left us well and truly scrambled.

After painstakingly counting thousands, yep thousands, of reader votes, it all culminated in this – the speakeasy party to end all parties.

Believe you’s me, it had it all – fedoras, flappers, cheers and beers (not to mention a few tantrums and tears). In the end though, only one per category could hold that glittering X and declare themselves Mr Big. So, who the devil won what? Here’s lookin’ at you folks!

EXPOSED AWARDS 2012 – NOMINEES AND WINNERS

1. Women's Fashion
Nominees – COW, COLLARD MANSON, SYD & MALLORY, JOY, ARK
Winner – Joy
How does it feel to be a winner?
Absolutely amazing, we’ve been around a year and a half and we didn’t get nominated last year – so it’s absolutely fantastic to win this year. Thanks to our customers. We really appreciate all the votes.

2. Best Hair Stylist
Nominees – PHIL NIXON – Vanilla, CLAIRE FLACK – Wigs and Warpaint, STEVE WAN – Wigs and Warpaint, JOSH TAYLOR – Taylor Taylor, CONRAD BLANDFORD – Conrad Blandford
Winner – Claire Flack, Wigs and Warpaint
What do you think is the secret to your success?
We’ve done more probably this year than any other year – and the whole team’s enjoying success because of it, it’s not just me. We’ve got two young guys now who are in the final in London for a big competition so the young people that we’re bringing through are doing really well. It’s important to put back into the team.

3. Best Cultural Attraction: SPONSORED By Doncaster Dome
Nominees – CITY HALL, MILLENIUM GALLERY, SHEFFIELD THEATRES, WESTON PARK MUSEUM, THE SHOWROOM
Winner – City Hall
Did you expect to win?
No, because the competition was really tough. It’s fantastic because we don’t always get recognised for culture, but we do actually have quite a big cultural offering in the city, so it means a lot – especially as we’re 80 years old this year.

4. Made in Sheffield
Nominees – FANCIE, XCVB Clothing, HENDERSON’S RELISH, EDWIN JAGGER, THE NICHOLS BUILDING
Winner – Edwin Jagger
Have you got anything you’d like to say to the readers of Exposed?
Read all about Sheffield, it probably is the best city to live in and work in. I travel the world and export to 24 countries and I love coming back to Sheffield every time, it’s the best city there is. And thank you very much indeed.

5. Best New Restaurant
Nominees – LA MAMA, SWANKY FRANKS, GUSTO
Winner – Gusto
How does it feel to be a winner?
Just a bit excited – we work hard so are very pleased. We’d just like to thank everybody that voted for us, to everyone else – come down and try the food in Gusto.

6. Best Real Ale Establishment
Nominees – THE HOP, THE FAT CAT, THE SHEFFIELD TAP, THE DEVONSHIRE CAT, KELHAM ISLAND TAVERN
Winner – The Fat Cat
How does it feel to be a winner?
Shocked, really shocked, because I know we’re a real ale outlet but were more like a hidden gem – we’re away from the main part of the city centre. It just shows how popular we are and I’m really, really pleased.

7. Best Unsigned Band/Musician: SPONSORED By The Leadmill
Nominees – HOT SOLES, WET NUNS, EVERLY PREGNANT BROTHERS, SECTION 60, HEY SHOLAY
Winner – Hot Soles
How does it feel to be a winner?
I can’t speak, I’m buzzing, I’m shocked. It’s very appreciative that people have read Exposed and actually like us – it’s always encouraging to know. I never expected to win anything at all whatsoever, so it’s amazing!

8. Best Café/Deli
Nominees – TAMPER COFFEE BAR, BRAGAZZI’S, MADE BY JONTY, PJ TASTE, FANCIE
Winner – Tamper Coffee Bar
What’s the secret to your success?
The key for us was to come to Sheffield and bring something new from New Zealand. I mean, this is what it’s all about. To be perfectly honest, it’s about getting independence and creating a name for a good coffee in Sheffield and really moving people away from the chains.

9. Best Bar Night
Nominees – FRESH FRUITS (Bowery), LAST LAUGH (Lescar), SOYO LIVE (Soyo), SPOILT BRAT (Players), RISQUE TUESDAYS (Viper Rooms)
Winner – Soyo Live
Where are you going to keep your award?
We’re gonna melt it down and sell it on. We’re gonna make our own rings. We might keep it behind the bar, no we’re keeping it in the office. Thank you to everyone who voted. Also thanks to all the fans, our sound tech Alex, everyone who’s come to a gig, bar staff, the DJs and bars.

10. Best Club Night
Nominees – THREADS (DQ), PROPAGANDA (O2), SONIC BOOM (Leadmill), UGLY (DQ), SHUFFLE (Plug)
Winner – Propaganda (O2)
Club Night
How does it feel to be a winner?
It feels amazing, really unexpected. We’ve never won it before. It’s been a tough couple of months as well. We’re definitely the best night in Sheffield, there’s no two ways about it, but I didn’t think it was gonna happen. Thank you to all the Exposed readers who voted.

11. Best Restaurant – Out of Town
Nominees – LE BISTROT PIERRE, RELISH, THE CRICKET INN, ARTISAN, THE MILESTONE
Winner – The Milestone
(use random pic of an award). Alas, The Milestone couldn’t make it on the night. Rest assured though, their award is in safe-hands, and they’ll receive it once our Ed’s stopped pretending he’s won ‘Stuntman of the Year’ with it.

12. Best Men's Fashion
Nominees – IDEOLOGY, SA-KIS, SEASONS, FRESHMANS, EACH TO THEIR OWN
Winners – Sa-Kis
Were you expecting that?
Not really. We’re good, but we won it last year, and you don’t expect the same shop to win it two years in a row – especially when there’s strong competition coming from the likes of Ideology. Those guys are doing a really good job, and also Seasons to be fair, they’re killing it as well.

13. Best Gents Barber Shop
Nominees – TAYLOR TAYLOR, FREESTYLERS, SAVILLS, WOLF & CO, EG HAIR
Winners – Savills
What does it feel like to win?
It’s an absolute honour. On behalf of everyone at Savills I’d like to thank God, my mum, my dad, the millions of fans worldwide. I’d like to thank the clients, the customers – we’re gonna polish the award with the polish we’ve got in the salon. It will be incredible! We all wanna see our faces in it!

14. Best Hair Salon: SPONSORED By G-Casino
Nominees – WIGS AND WARPAINT, VANILLA By Sara Barlow, LOVE YOUR HAIR, CONRAD BLANDFORD, HAIR KANDI
Winner – Wigs and Warpaint
Does it get any better than this?
If you don’t keep growing, and you don’t progress, you’re gonna lose a good team – so were creating opportunities for people. We’re trying to make everybody shine, and have their moment, and grow and be part of something good and have aspirations. That’s what we’re trying to do.

15.   Best Local Event: SPONSORED By Jump Forward
Nominees – PUB SCRAWL, CLIFFHANGER, PEACE IN THE PARK, SHEFFIELD PRIDE, TRAMLINES
Winner – Tramlines
Sum up tonight in 3 words: Drunk, f**king, amazeballs!

Nominees – THE HOP, THE GREAT GATSBY, THE BROADFIELD, THE VIPER ROOMS, MAGGIE MAYS

Did you expect to win?
We hoped to but didn’t feel like we could beat off all the competition, there was a lot of great competition, some very good bars. The last few months have been awesome though. We’ve always been busy and everyone’s been recommending us.

Viper Rooms!
Our exclusive after party was held in real style thanks to the guys and gals at The Viper Rooms. The place was jumpin’ like Fat Sam’s on a Friday – filled to the rafters with glitzy awards-goers celebrating their wins and drowning their sorrows at coming second place. Needless to say, the rest of the time they’re open to one and all, playing host to a bunch of ace nights such as Geek Chic on Mondays, Risque Tuesdays, and live music monolith Neighbourhood every Weds. Have a butchers at www.sheffield.theviperooms.co.uk or find them on Facebook for more.
