The Thing (15)
Director: George Clooney
Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton
In Antarctica there is a research station. This research station has found an alien craft, and inside a huge block of frozen ice there is a very large alien. Are you shocked that the alien wakes up and starts to fillet the people in various ways? It’s just another day in the life of a disposable character in a science fiction horror film.
This film is a prequel to John Carpenter’s cult classic of the 80s. It’s not a remake, and doesn’t suffer from any of the decay associated with the bad remakes we’ve had to endure recently. The film has genuine shocks and chills, along with enough action and paranoia to keep everyone happy.
The Antarctic background of snow and darkness makes The Thing this year’s alternative Christmas film. No reindeer, happy endings or soppy growth. It’s a refreshing change and one you should really see if you’re over the age of eight. Go see this at the cinema and then go home and watch the original to avoid the endless repeats on TV.
