The Multi-Million Pound Plot – Sheffield Motorpoint's Year Of Improvement

Sheffield Motorpoint Arena has quite a year lined up, with sometime Mods, occasional Rockers mega group The Who and Miranda 'Miranda' Hart gracing the Motorpoint's massive innards. But there’s also plans afoot to give our fair Arena a fresh make-over…

The Arena opened way back in May 1991 by Her Majesty Lizzy Windsor to host the World Student Games, so the Sheffield landmark is well over-due for some TLC. And it’ll be getting just that with the new multi-million pound investment plan. First they’ll be taking the roof off (literally), with a brand new one being put up. But hold on, it gets better… there’s also plans to rip out all of the Arena’s 12,500 seats and replace them with a 'more modern and comfortable' space to settle down for the evening.

The Motorpoint Arena is, of course, where Sheffield Steelers pick up the puck in our city's honour and they're an integral part of the Arena's busy calendar. So to help all you avid hockey-goers, new scratch-resistant plexi-glass is getting installed to improve the viewing experience from the lower tiers. Not too shabby, eh? All this is part of the Arena’s huge investment plan, designed to keep the Motorpoint Arena competitive, on the national and international stage, as a premiere leisure and entertainment venue – especially with Leeds Arena on the horizon.

To stay top dog means attracting the biggest and glitziest names, hence rock legends The Who bringing ‘Quadrophenia’ on 18th June and ubiquitous funnywoman Miranda Hart arriving 6th April, plus many more names, are helping put a big fat Magic Marker ring round Sheffield’s biggest venue. From the seats to the ceiling to the celebs, we’re more than a bit excited…

Visit the Motorpoint Arena’s website here for The Who/What/Where/When of all things entertainment, and you can follow them on @MotorpointArena. Don’t forget to watch this space for the latest announcements as the scheme kicks up a gear.
