The Moor Market: Beer Central

Three Cheers For The Beers: Moor Market Beer Central Christmas Treats.

Beer Central celebrate their first year of opening this month – my, how time flies when you’re having beery fun!

Last year they took the smart step of opening a city centre bottle shop with a sharp focus on the very latest modern craft beers and local traditional ales. You’ll find them down in the city centre, just inside the striking main entrance to the Moor Market, where they continue to sell an outstanding and varied range of bottles, cans, t-shirts, mini-kegs and gift boxes.

As a small independent company (the type that Sheffield loves to embrace), they can source beers from anywhere they like – and, in addition to popular local stuff from Bradfield, Kelham Island, Thornbridge and Acorn, they also have other UK leading brews from the Wild Beer Co, Siren, The Kernel, Tempest, Weird Beard, Beavertown, Brewdog and oodles more.

Add to this a ton of beers from the USA, Norway, Belgium, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands – and you pretty much have the world of beer covered. Don’t be surprised by how small this shop is when you arrive – within a few seconds you’ll realise their clever design allows them to stock over 400 different beers (and they even have a tiny fridge to guarantee a few cold craft cans for those in desperate need)! You can browse the booze, taking in all the cool labels, or tap into the knowledge and expertise of their very approachable team. Sean pretends to be in charge, but Joanne and Deborah like to take all the credit – and all three can always be relied upon for help and advice in picking the right brew!

They have Christmas sewn up – with dozens of special winter beers – and of course they also sell cider and mead, perfect as mulled winter drinks with warming spices. Their hand-made wooden beer crates are very cool and make a perfect pressie; fill them up with half a dozen beers and you have a gift that every beer lover would die for. Personalised gift vouchers are also available, giving your loved one the chance to pop down and buy exactly what they want, easy Christmas shopping! Beer Central also deliver boxes of beer across the UK – perfect if you need to send a gift to a brother in Brighton or a beer crazy auntie in Aberdeen!

City centre parking can sometimes be a nightmare – but we found free parking for an hour within 3-4 minutes’ walk of the shop. Alternatively, Atkinson’s do a cheap deal for Moor Market shoppers. Beer Central also has a loyalty card scheme (Beer with Benefits) – so grab your exclusive discount card the next time you’re nearby.

You should also keep an eye out for their newly organised free ‘Bottle Share’ events in some of the city’s best pubs – a once a month chance to meet up with fellow beer lovers and share a few special bottles and beery chat. We hear from a few regulars that these are fantastic nights, but fill up almost instantly, so be quick.

As well as constantly promoting their latest stock via Twitter and Facebook, the good news is their website will be finished shortly and will include an online shop and UK wide delivery service. You’ll find them soon at www.beercentral.co.uk

The latest copies of Sheffield CAMRA’s Beer Matters magazine are also available from their shop which opens Mon-Sat 8.30am to 5.30pm.

Most of all, enjoy your beers – we did!
