Street Style – Nonna's Pavement Pizza

'Originale Is Everything…'

That's the motto at Nonnas – and it sums them up to a tee.

See, they're more than just a restaurant. Much more. Since forming some 16 years ago, they've become the city's finest purveyor of Italian culture. From hosting their popular Mercato every Saturday, where folks can get their hands on the freshest produce straight from the Milan markets, through to producing their own olive oil, wine and even letting out their own Tuscan villa, all are pieces of a beautiful jigsaw. But, until recently, there was one piece missing to complete the picture.

Enter Nonnas Pizza. Bridging the gap between the bohemia of Sharrowvale and the bright lights of Ecclesall Road, the new venture sees Nonnas, once again, living up to their motto, as well as creating a whole new one – 'Non riguarda sempre e solo la bici' – 'It's not always about the bike'. Intrigued? You ought to be.

"It's basically the culmination of a shared passion for food, wine and cycling," smiles co-owner Gian.

"Myself and two fellow enthusiasts set up a cycling club, La Squadra, around two years ago, which has since grown to over 100 members. It's more than just cycling, it's about camaraderie and celebrating Italian culture – so there's plenty of eating, drinking and good times involved. That's where the idea for Nonnas Pizza came from. It's an extension of everything we love."

It's a place where different worlds collide. A place where authentic Italian street food rubs shoulders with urban street art and cycling cool – and it's fair to say that Sheffield has never seen anything like it.

"Cycling and pizza may seem like an odd combination at first – but to us it's the most natural thing in the world," adds Gian. "The great thing is, as soon as people step through the door, they get it."

When it comes to the pizzas, they're absolute whoppers at 40cm, and Nonnas Pizza is the only place in the city where you can get them 'al taglio' (by the slice) – a bargain from just £2.50. A rustic menu is available to tear off the counter and features everything from the classics through to 'Britalian', gourmet and bianche (without tomato) offerings. Fans of the restaurant round the corner will be pleased to know their legendary lasagne also makes an appearance.

"We don't cut corners here. It's the same quality ingredients you'll find in our restaurant, fused with our vast knowledge of Italian cuisine," says Gian.

Then there's the 'Drinks Den' – where folk can pick up a chilled Peroni, Italian artisan beer or a bottle of Nonnas vino. And, of course, the La Squadra HQ – chock full of memorabilia, books and magazines, along with a huge media wall celebrating cycling exploits, past and present, from around the world.

"It's the sum of all its parts. A place to share stories, meet friends and enjoy quality authentic food and drink at quality prices,” beams Gian. “Every aspect comes together to make it whole. It's the embodiment of everything we believe in – and we’re absolutely delighted to be able to bring this new, exciting and innovative concept to the Sheffield food scene."
