ORCHESTRA OF THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment makes its Sheffield International Concert Season debut under the direction of David Zinman, one of today’s most respected conductors. Performing on original instruments, this world-renowned ensemble is joined by Antony Pay for Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No.1, a gem from the instrument’s repertoire. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, with its astonishing mix of airy dance rhythms, achingly beautiful Allegretto and whirlwind finale, is one of his most beguiling works. This refreshing performance opens with extracts from Mendelssohn’s bewitching, gossamer-light evocation of the magical forest that is the setting for A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
