Hunt Is On For Yorkshire Cocktail!

A new competition is set to stir the creative juices of Yorkshire’s bartenders as they are invited to craft a new, true Yorkshire cocktail.
The 'Made in Yorkshire' competition involves the creation of a new, highly tasty cocktail recipe using at least one key ingredient produced in God’s Own Country.
The idea behind the competition is simple; to encourage bartenders across Yorkshire to use the fantastic array of high quality produce around them. It’s also a great showcase for the county’s talented and creative bar staff and showcase Yorkshire as a cosmopolitan destination.
Whether the cocktail includes local ale, a taste of rhubarb or has a Pontefract liquorice twist – we want to know.
Bartenders are being invited to enter their recipe ideas before June 17. These will be considered by a panel, who will then select the most creative to enter one of three area heats in Leeds, Sheffield and York. There their creations will be assessed in looks, taste and creativity.
The final 10 competitors who make it through their respective heats will battle it out and prove their ‘cocktailing credentials’ in front of several well known industry expert judges in the grand final at the stunning SkyLounge bar at Mint Hotel, Leeds on the afternoon of Yorkshire Day, August 1, 2011.
The final judges include cocktail guru Simon Difford, of Difford’s Guide and Class Magazine, Christine Austin, the Yorkshire Post’s wine and spirits expert; Douglas Blyde, gastromoner and contributor to Harper’s Wines & Spirits; and James Chase, son of the founder of Chase Distillery in Herefordshire who created the world award-winning Chase Vodka. They will be joined by Peter Dodd, Marketing Director at Welcome to Yorkshire.
The winning cocktail recipe will be distributed across the county as the official ‘Made in Yorkshire Cocktail 2011’ and the winner will be crowned ‘Made in Yorkshire’s Best Bartender 2011’.
The competition is being run by SLB PR, with support from Welcome to Yorkshire – the county’s official tourism agency.
SLB PR director, Sharon Brigden says: “Made in Yorkshire is designed to promote the county’s fantastic nightlife throughout the UK and beyond. We have enlisted the help of our clients and friends, especially Latitude Wine & Liquor Merchants, to highlight the combination of exceptional regional produce and outstanding bars, which help give Yorkshire its deserved nightlife reputation.”
Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “We’ve been marketing our great county nationally and internationally in a way which not only celebrates its rich history and heritage, but also promotes the cutting edge and contemporary things we have to offer.  This competition mirrors that and by drawing on traditional Yorkshire flavours, the county’s skilled bar tenders will I’m sure, come up with some really creative cocktails that celebrate all that’s good about Yorkshire.”
Information and Entry packs are available on request from SLB Public Relations ( as well as being sent out to bars across Yorkshire.
