Hop to It!
December 1 saw the highly anticipated VIP launch of The Hop – a brand new live music and real ale venue in the city centre.
Based smack bang in the middle of the action in West One, The Hop is the brainchild of Ossett Brewery, who’ve previously launched ‘Hops’ in both Leeds and Wakefield – and crikey, they ain’t half done a cracking job with it.
Formerly a Budgens supermarket, no expense has been spared transforming the place into a contemporary watering hole, with music memorabilia adorning the exposed brickwork and an array of handpumps that had our resident ale slurper salivating.
Ossett Brewery was founded in 1997 by ex-Tetley brewer Bob Lawson (who also did a three year stint with Kelham Island Brewery here in Sheffield), whilst The Hop concept was conceived in 2008 by Jamie Lawson (Director of Ossett Brewery), Mike Heaton (drummer with Embrace) and Mike Inman (former Virgin Entertainment Japan MD).
The opening party saw the place packed to the rafters, with punters enjoying the likes of Ossett Gold, Ossett Treacle Stout and Ossett Excelsior on tap – all accompanied by a live party covers soundtrack. Expect everything from pub quizzes to beer fests and acoustic nights on a regular basis. We’re also told their pies are the stuff of legend. In summary, make a beeline for the place soon as, yeah?
