Hitchhikers Guide to Red Dwarf!
“More popular than the Celestial Home Care Omnibus, better selling than Fifty-Three More Things to do in Zero Gravity, and more controversial than Oolon Colluphid's trilogy of philosophical blockbusters Where God Went Wrong , Some More of God's Greatest Mistakes and Who is this God Person Anyway? The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy has already supplanted the Encyclopedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom, for two important reasons. First, it's slightly cheaper; and secondly it has the words DON'T PANIC printed in large friendly letters on its cover…”
It is cheating slightly to use pretty much an entire paragraph from Douglas Adam’s brilliant sci-fi epic (also, cricket) to promote the visit of The Hitchhikers' Guide to The Galaxy to our fair Sheffield. But Adams does with words what W C Fields did to balls. And the above – taken from the universe traversing tome of the title – is a great way into Adam’s world.
Funny, cunning as an eight-headed cyberfox and as awe-inspiring for its ideas (which gave us the Babelfish and the Dark Internet amongst other things) as for its amazing sci-fi vistas, Hitchhikers Guide has remained ahead of its time since its first appearance as a radio show some thirty years ago.
Now, after television series, books, videogames and Hollywood movie it goes back to the beginning, with a live radio performance featuring original cast members including Geoff McGivern as Ford Prefect, Susan Sheridan as Trillian and Simon Jones as Arthur Dent himself. PLUS – Danny John-Jules, Cat from Red Dwarf(!) as The Voice of The Book! Rawr!
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy is at Sheffield City Hall on Monday 7 th October. Doors 6.30pm, show at 7.30pm. Tickets here .
