Forge Bakehouse Rise to the Occasion

It seems that Sheffield has suddenly woken up and smelt the fresh bread…
What with recent openings of Sheaf Valley Bakery at Castle Market and Seven Hills Bakery on Sharrow Vale Road, nobody can say that Sheffield doesn't know a thing or two about a good loaf. And in these times of austerity it does seem apt that we're remembering to appreciate the bread and butter stuff of life.
Brand new to the scene is Forge Bakehouse on Abbeydale Road. Owners Ben and Martha met at the School of Artisan Food when studying a diploma course in bakery. They came away with a new skill and a business idea… and so Forge Bakehouse was born!
The bakery’s focus is mainly on sourdough bread, but does include other popular choices such as baguettes and ciabattas. They also plan to have a couple of specials on every week so it’s worth popping in to see what they have available. With minors in patisserie it’s not surprising that the pair have a few tasty sweets on the menu. There are Portuguese custard tarts, brownies, cinnamon rolls, chai brulee tarts and plans for more with talk of bagels and doughnuts too.

I went to their launch night a couple of weeks ago and was impressed, not only by their beautiful looking bread, but by the look and feel to the bakery itself. Going against the grain, Martha and Ben have gone for Scandinavian clean lines rather than rustic farmhouse style. This keeps the bakery clean and fuss free letting the bread do the talking. With an open bakery the sight of fresh breads coming out of the oven is bound to invite customers in from the street, as will the smells wafting out.
Hardly an Artisan food destination, this area of the city may not be seen as the most obvious location, but that’s part of the appeal for owners Ben and Martha. Although they’re producing an artisan product, Forge Bakehouse aims to be accessible to all and the bread is priced fairly in the hope that shopping there becomes part of everyone’s daily routine. Of course the bread is very different to the stuff you will see in the supermarket but that’s no reason to only have it for a treat. After all everyone should be able to enjoy their daily bread.
Forge Bakehouse are open Tuesday-Saturday 9am to 6pm, and Sunday between 10am and 3pm.
