England Expects

Last night, the This Is England ’86 juggernaut stormed into town for a special preview event at the Showroom Cinema, transforming the venue into a 1980’s mecca.
Fans queued around the corner to catch a first glimpse of Shane Meadows’ TV spin-off picking up with the characters from his 2006 film This Is England several years on.
Meadows was in attendance on the night, along with many cast members including Thomas Turgoose (Shaun), Vicky McClure (Lol), Joe Gilgun (Woody), Andrew Shim (Milky) and Rosamund Hanson (Smell).
As guests entered the Showroom they were transported into a 1980’s wedding reception complete with ska band, cans of Red Stripe and Monster Munch nibbles. An after party followed the screening at the Cremorne pub where cast members pulled pints for punters and pogoed on the dance floor.
The four part series was filmed in Sheffield and produced by local institution Warp Films with support from Screen Yorkshire. It seemed only fitting therefore that the launch event should be held in Sheffield. “I fell in love with Sheffield” commented Meadows, “so did the cast”. Thanks Shane, we love you too.
This Is England ’86 starts on Channel 4, Tuesday 07 September, 10pm.
