Climax and LGBT celebrate National Coming Out Day
Thousands of people across the world have spent the day celebrating National Coming Out Day, dedicated to raising awareness and reflecting on the progressive liberation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual community. Nights Out Sheffield’s LGBT club night Climax has teamed up with the University of Sheffield’s LGBT committee to host a late night party in The SU’s studio and foundry.
Drawing in students and non-students alike, the usual monthly Climax is doing something a little different tonight. With just a few weeks to go before their huge Halloween party, tonights slightly smaller version of Climax will be a cheeky tease to any newbies of their big nights to come. Rather than tell you what makes this Climax different from the rest, we thought it would be better to come from Cez Mabe, chair of the LGBT committee.
Exposed: We hear this is the first time that the LGBT committee ever celebrated the National Coming Out Day. What do you want to get out of today?
Cez: It’s not about forcing anyone to come out and I really want to emphasise that if it’s not safe then don’t, but I really want to bring out straight allies and show people struggling with their sexuality that there's support around them.
What made you choose to team up with Climax for the NCOD party?
Climax was initially set up by the LGBT committee years ago, and Nights Out Sheffield took over when it got really big. We thought it would be a nice way to end the day by hosting a special one-off night with them.
What’s going to be different about this Climax than the others?
Aside from the fact that it never happens this time of year, it’s a more intimately sized space, as it’s in the Studio and Fusion rather than Fusion and Foundry. But I’m looking forward to that because I feel like it will be a less daunting way to show newcomers an insight into what we do, before Climax's huge halloween night at the end of the month! We’ll also have glowsticks, badges and whiteboards to play with.
The Climax National Coming Out Party starts at 11pm tonight in Studio and Fusion with DJ Peachey Keen. Tickets cost £5.50 with NUS and £6 without.
