Amir Graze – Khan Fights in Sheffield

Like a Danny Garcia left hook, news of Amir Khan’s bout at the Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on 27 April came out of nowhere but packed a mighty punch…

The former four time world champion boxer will fight in the UK for the first time in two years against Mexican Julio Diaz in a card that also features Olympic silver medallist and Splash! contestant (also, Chicken Terikayi advocate) Anthony Ogogo’s pro debut as well as the debut of Khan’s brother Haroon.

A huge coup for Sheffield then and a great opportunity to catch Khan – still one of the most exiting boxers around – make his hypnotising way across the canvas. And as former lightweight boxer, Sheffield Boxing Centre owner and – as of 2013 – MBE recipient Glyn Rhodes suggested when we spoke to him earlier today, this might be part of a longer term plan for the city. “At first I found it hard to understand why they picked Sheffield cos Khan’s got a huge following in Bolton.” He suggests. “But I reckon they might be working towards a fight with Kell Brook. That’d be great. Great fight for Sheffield, great fight for the public. Both came through the ranks together and Brook’s on the way up. They’d sell a lot of tickets.”

We can see it. And if you can’t wait til April, why not catch the next in Glyn’s Fire on Ice events at Ice Sheffield? Starting at the end of last year the family-friendly boxing showcases events are already delivering the next generation of Sheffield fighters. “Watch John Fewkes,” Glynn suggests. “He went straight to GB number nine then retired a couple of years ago and spent a bit of time in the wilderness but he’s still young, got a great boxing brain on him and his head’s on the job. Only bout he’s lost (Martin Gethin) I didn’t work in his corner and he’s fighting on Saturday.”

Amir Khan fights Julio Diaz on Saturday 27th April. Tickets go on sale shortly. Follow Sheffield Motorpoint Arena on Twitter for more info.
