Melbourne garage-rock quintet Delivery are heading back to Sheff for a fourth time, with a new single in tow and a third album on the horizon. Isabel Butler spoke to bassist Bec about Steel City connections, M&S foodhall inspo and how they’re partial to a lagerita or two.

First off, it would be great if you could introduce yourselves to the Exposed readers.

We are Delivery – Bec, James, Scarlett, Jordy and Liam. A five-piece garage rock band from Melbourne.

What specifically brings you back to Sheffield?

Sheffield was where we played our first overseas show ever! As soon as we arrived at Delicious Clam it felt like we had landed in the right place and found a scene of like-minded people that was really similar to our music community at home. We’ve been back three times now, so this time will be our fourth. They can’t keep us away! We love the people, the energy and the lageritas.

Any places you’re planning on hitting up while you’re here?

For how many times we have been to Sheffield, we have definitely not seen enough of the city. We haven’t even seen the Arctic Monkeys AM elephant yet! Maybe that should be on the to-do list this time. Our guitarist Jordy also has some family history in Sheffield which we’ve been meaning to delve into as well – his great, great… great-grandfather John owned a pub called the Yellow Lion Inn, which is now known as the Norfolk Arms. A beer there seems fitting!

How are you feeling ahead of the release of your third album?

Super excited! I feel like we’ve put so much into the new album, so it will feel great to start sharing it with everyone. We’ve had a little break from playing while we’ve been working hard behind the scenes getting the album ready to go, so we’re all raring to get back out there and on the road a bunch again!

What’s been the inspo for the latest tunes?

We had a bit of an ‘inspo playlist’ going for this next record, which is the first time we’ve ever done that. A few choice selections from that are:

‘Tribulations’ – LCD Soundsystem

‘What’s That Got to Do With Loving You?’ – Los Microwaves

‘Lucid Dreams’ – Franz Ferdinand (complete with the four-minute electro outro)

‘Trotzstadt’ – Casey Mueller

‘West End Girls’ – Pet Shop Boys

Make what you want of that! A general guiding idea was to try our hand at a ‘late-night album’.

You often get compared to bands such as Wet Leg and Parquet Courts, but if you were to choose two bands that Delivery is most like, who would you pick?

We like both of those bands, so any comparison is always flattering, but probably most honestly, our biggest goal is making songs that sound like Delivery. But we could still be tempted to shoot a little closer to The Hives… maybe we could sound like Delivery with the fashion and charisma of The Hives, then?

What would be your go-to, on-the-go tour snack?

Delivery is quite a big ‘foodie’ band, so we’re always on the hunt for any local delicacy, but at the same time, touring always lends itself to some wacky eating habits. My favourite last tour was the M&S falafel wrap, but a close second would be just putting whatever leftover rider snacks we had from the night before into bread to form an interesting sandwich – always a good go-to in the van!
