Introduction
Eyewear fads are a funny thing. One minute, a particular colour or frame style rules the internet, and next, it looks like you took it out of dad’s wardrobe years later. The other day, I was having a chit-chat about the fuss people make when they feel left out of eyewear trends. I’m sure you must’ve seen people wearing weird sunnies and eyeglasses because they’re in trend.
I agree that trends are captivating. They dictate what’s in & out in context to stay updated with style & fashion, but it isn’t necessary that something in trend would look great on you. That’s a lesson people often learn the hard way.
Here’s why I think you shouldn’t follow any trend blindly. This would help you not spend impulsively and make informed decisions while purchasing the right eyewear, be it sunglasses or prescription eyeglasses.
Why You Must Avoid Following Trends Blindly
I realised a week ago that not every frame you see will suit your face. My spouse and I went to purchase a pair of “trendy” black prescription glasses at Specscart. I have a rounded face and wanted to buy a browline frame.
Even after trying 15 different frames, I couldn’t finalise one for myself. At this point in time, my partner was visibly frustrated.
This wasn’t because of a poor frame collection at the store, but my lack of understanding of face shape. Rounded frames didn’t provide the definition my face needed.
Then an optical expert guided me through the right pair, based on my facial features. I was shown the right pair of square-frame prescription glasses. They weren’t too tight or too big for my face, but just right to complement my looks.
When A Trend Doesn’t Suit You

Over the years, I have observed that eyewear style trends storm in & fade away quickly. There are multiple reasons why I feel following eyewear trends isn’t worthwhile.
Your Prescription Gets A Say Too
My foremost concern is the rigidity of frames with the prescription. Individuals with a high prescription have limited access to stylish frames & lenses unless they’re willing to spend more for using a thin lens.
Not Every Face Loves Every Colour
The colour of your glasses can complement the colour of your skin, hair, and eyes, but there’s no universal rule of what looks good. While colour choice is entirely personal, a trend shouldn’t dictate it.
You’d Probably Wear Them Tomorrow
Most of us wear the same frame every day for several years. Since micro-trends show up & fade away quickly, keeping up with them for long isn’t practically possible.
Because Comfort Matters
I’ve been wearing prescription glasses for years, and comfort matters a lot to me. Many people would agree because no one would like their spectacles to slip down the nose. Eyeglasses that fit properly and do not feel tight at the temples are the ones that matter, as compared to the unconventional frames.
Your Glasses Should Match Your Personality
Eyewear will always be the focal point for your face, and often becomes your signature look. Vibrant frames might catch the eye & convey boldness, but they wouldn’t fit in with your real identity.
How To Get Rid of Eyewear Trend FoMo
I wonder if I was wearing a frame that wasn’t right for me for nearly half of my life. Eyewear trends were never a problem. It was all about assuming that a frame which looks awesome on others would look perfect on me too. Sometimes, it isn’t about the frame that everyone is wearing, but the one that you actually want to keep wearing.
