A new event spanning four stages across Sheffield will feature free live music throughout the afternoon on Saturday 20 June.
The Sheffield Music Trail, delivered by the University of Sheffield, aims to showcase a mix of emerging talent alongside performances from more established artists.
Performances will take place between 12.30pm and 5pm, with stages outside The Diamond, the Winter Gardens, Leah’s Yard and Harmony Works at Canada House.
Neil McSweeney, Senior University Teacher at the University of Sheffield and co-founder and director of Hudson Records, said: “The flowering of world-class musical talent that Sheffield has produced time and again has deep and multifarious roots.
“It is important we recognise and value the many distinct communities of musical practice that make up the local grassroots scene today.”
The event will act as a curtain-raiser for the upcoming Sheffield City of Music report, a major study commissioned by the University to reveal the economic and cultural impact of music on the city.
Organisers hope the study will help lay out a definitive way forward for Sheffield’s musical future.
Alongside the event, the University has partnered with Tickets for Good and the Sheffield Independent Venues Alliance (SIVA) to buy tickets from local grassroots venues and distribute them to NHS staff and community members facing financial barriers.
The initiative aims to strengthen the city’s independent music ecosystem and broaden access to live performance through direct financial support for grassroots venues.
