Welsh comedian, broadcaster, consumer champion and Sheffield exhile Vix Leyton is bringing her latest Edinburgh Fringe show, Chief Petty Officer, to the Fat Cat in Kelham Island this month.

Taking place at 8pm on 11 June, the preview show blends stand-up, comedy lecture and historical investigation to explore one surprisingly universal subject: pettiness.

Across the show, Leyton examines the fine line between justice and grudges, unpacking the role that petty behaviour has played in shaping history, politics, celebrity culture and everyday British life.

Using research, storytelling and a whiteboard, Chief Petty Officer dives into everything from corporate rivalries and internet drama to passive aggressive neighbour disputes – all in search of the “perfect petty act”.

For Leyton, whose career has included exposing consumer issues and helping audiences navigate disputes on BBC programmes including Morning Live, the idea came from years spent watching how people react when something feels unfair.

“As a consumer expert, I’ve spent years talking to people who are fighting for justice over things that seem small to everyone else,” she says. “A missing refund, an unfair charge, a pothole being ignored by the local council.

“What fascinated me while researching this show was realising that the same instinct appears throughout history.”

She adds: “People have an incredible capacity to devote huge amounts of energy to correcting what they perceive as a minor wrong. Sometimes that results in a successful complaint. Sometimes it starts a war, creates a rival company, or changes the course of history.”

The show marks the first time Leyton has fully combined her worlds of broadcasting and comedy. Alongside her media work and co-hosting the consumer podcasts False Economy and Spendology, she is also known on the comedy circuit as creator of live show and podcast The Comedy Arcade, which has enjoyed successful runs at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Leyton only began performing stand-up a few years ago after taking a comedy course to overcome a fear of public speaking, but has quickly built a reputation as “one to watch”, earning praise from comedians including Mark Watson and Robin Ince.

“Looking back, this show feels inevitable,” says Leyton. “I’ve spent years professionally investigating what happens when people refuse to accept unfairness. Chief Petty Officer is what happened when I realised history is full of exactly the same people.

“The difference is that sometimes the response is a complaint letter, and sometimes it’s founding a rival shoe company out of spite.”

Chief Petty Officer comes to the Fat Cat, Kelham Island, on 11 June at 8pm and we reckon it’s gonna be a fun night. Tickets available here for just £6.50 a pop.
