Barnum has long been a musical I’ve wanted to see, particularly following the renewed interest in circus themed storytelling sparked by The Greatest Showman. So, stepping into the beautiful Lyceum Theatre, it certainly felt as though the circus had officially arrived in Sheffield.

With Lee Mead billed in the title role, expectations were high. Many will remember him as the winner of the BBC’s Any Dream Will Do, which led to his starring role in the 2007 West End revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Unfortunately, Lee was absent on opening night, with understudy Tom Sterling stepping into the role at short notice and taking on the part admirably.

The choreography, courtesy of the ever talented Oti Mabuse, brings much of the production’s energy and flair. Bold, flamboyant and full of movement, each scene transitions seamlessly into the next, giving the show a lively momentum throughout.

No matter the scene, or whose turn it is in the spotlight, the acrobats are often the true stars of the show. Their aerial routines and hoop work are mesmerising, adding a genuine sense of spectacle and wonder. Special mention must also go to Laura Sillett, whose commanding ringmaster performance and powerhouse vocals leave a lasting impression.

One of the evening’s most engaging moments comes when Barnum attempts his own tightrope walk, with the audience wholeheartedly willing him on. By the fourth attempt, success still proves elusive, but the cheers remain just as loud. It’s a sequence that captures the playful spirit of the production perfectly.

The ensemble’s musicality is another standout element. Constantly moving around the stage while playing instruments, often appearing to switch between songs, their versatility and talent are undeniable. While Barnum dazzles visually and delivers plenty of theatrical spectacle, the story itself feels comparatively slight and at times struggles to match the energy happening around it. That said, the vibrant staging, impressive performances and circus thrills make it an entertaining outing, particularly for families and those looking for a lively night at the theatre.
