Held on the last Monday of every month, Unherd is a new non-profit multi-genre jam night that brings together a unique mix of genres, styles, and instruments to the heart of Sheffield.

Chris Godhard, a director of Unherd Sheffield, described the events as: “A relaxed, friendly space that welcomes everyone who enjoys music, and offers the chance to play and listen to the weird and wonderful.”

Sheffield’s thriving music scene is the heart of its identity and culture, from inspiring the evolution of electronic dance music, to today’s thriving grassroots, DIY and folk scenes, the city is internationally recognised for its musical heritage.

Noah, another director of Unherd said: “There is a great DIY music scene in Sheffield as well as strong communities of jazz, rock, blues, classical, folk, etc. The gap we hope to fill is to provide a space for a community for those who don’t neatly fit into these genres, or who want to explore what happens when we blur the lines and cram things together which shouldn’t quite fit, because we think that’s when music is at its most interesting and innovative.”

Alongside their ‘anything goes’ ethos, Unherd’s spot in Mary St Live ensures a safe and welcoming environment for musicians, poets and spoken word artists alike, of all levels to come down and create something captivating and unmatched.

As the city continues to grow and change, it is important that new development recognises and supports the cultural spaces that already exist and continue to define Sheffield as a vibrant, creative place to live, work and visit.

In 2025, grassroots music venues in Sheffield united to form The Sheffield Independent Venues Alliance (SIVA), to champion, support, and secure the future of Sheffield’s independent music venues.

By fostering collaboration, amplifying the sector’s voice, and strengthening ties with the council, local communities and other stakeholders, SIVA ensures a secure and sustainable music scene across the city.

Noah added: “Sheffield has a habit of being skipped over by touring bands for the likes of Leeds and Manchester, which makes the host of organisations in Sheffield which help to develop and provide opportunities for local talent all the more important. Nights like this exist so that that talent can come together on its own terms and flourish. There is so much creativity and talent in Sheffield which needs to be heard.”

“We’re excited to see the night grow and make a contribution to Sheffield’s music scene, and we hope to see you there”
