Sheffield’s diverse and vibrant food scene is making space for a new plate at the table.
Da Lat Corner, a homemade Vietnamese delivery service founded by Thu Nguyen, will offer a variety of popular traditional Vietnamese dishes, including cha gio (crispy fried spring rolls) and goi cuon (fresh summer rolls.)
Before this venture into the world of entrepreneurship, Ms Nguyen had been living in Vietnam for the last few years in Saigon and Da Lat, with her husband Joe Buckley and identical twin girls, Quynh and Vy.
The family had chosen to make the move to the UK in February to be closer to Joe’s roots in Sheffield.
Once settled in the Abbeydale area, Thu decided she needed a change – a way to combat homesickness and stay connected to her Vietnamese roots.
This led to the birth of Da Lat Corner, a tribute to her hometown in Vietnam, which is also called the ‘City of Flowers’ and the ‘City of Love’ due to its remarkable landscapes, fertile climate and local produce.
Thu said of the new venture: “In Da Lat, food is everywhere, on every street corner and in every home. My mother is a wonderful cook, and she started teaching me when I was just 10.
“Cooking has always been part of my life, and when we moved to the UK, I really missed the food and the culture.
“Starting this business is a way to bring a little piece of home to Sheffield, and to share our beautiful cuisine with others.”
Each dish is made from scratch by Thu in her home kitchen, using fresh, high-quality ingredients and traditional Vietnamese techniques bringing her culture to the rest of the Steel City.
Her husband Joe added: “This business is more than just meals; it’s a story, a culture, a connection to where Thu comes from.”
Customers will soon be able to place orders directly in June – once open, Thu has bigger plans for the future of Da Lat Corner.
She hopes to cater at food festivals, pop-up events and eventually own a food truck, which will allow her to deliver fresh Vietnamese lunches not just in Sheffield but across the region. Watch this space!
