UK Mama Restaurant and Takeaway
UK Mama was the first African Caribbean Restaurant & Takeaway in the history of Yorkshire when it opened back in 1999 – so, needless to say, it garnered a fair bit of interest.
The brainchild of pathologist Godson Ogwudire, the Broomhill eatery has since gathered a reputation for authentic cuisine and a party atmosphere, with regular live African music in the offing. The décor is very traditional, with African masks and other such paraphernalia adorning the walls - you’re transported to another world from the moment you set foot through the door.
I’d been looking forward to this one since meeting Godson. I liked him straight away because he’s quite the character – and his venue echoes his personality. Caribbean cuisine is a firm favourite with me so, ahead of my arrival, I had high expectations for UK Mama – especially given their quotes of ‘as featured on TV’ et al.
It’s a small place, but packed with atmosphere, and the intimacy adds a real warmth to the experience. African music helps to add to the authenticity and I find myself tapping my foot and table drumming as our orders are taken. It’s a Tuesday night and the place is packed, which speaks volumes for the establishment. To put you in the mood.
The Mama special ‘fruit punch’ kicks off proceedings (although its ingredients remained a secret). Refreshing, and it whet the palette nicely for appetisers of Harira Vegetable Soup and a delicious dish I can only describe as fried popcorn balls. These are swiftly followed by starters of lightly cooked prawns with salad and Opirima – fried plantain and sweet potato which couldn’t be faulted for flavour or authenticity.
Mains of Lamb Tagine on the bone (which, frankly, melted in the mouth) and Escoveich (a delicious fish combined with mixed peppers and chilli) left us full to bursting in the very best of ways.
UK Mama is without doubt the best value for money restaurant I’ve ever visited in Sheffield. You can have a starter, main, sides and dessert for £10 - and that’s for two people! It’s fast becoming a Sheffield institution. Give it a whirl… and, if you’re lucky, Godson will even get his drums out for you.
