Wytches

Dr Martens SFS @ Corporation

Review of Dr Martens Stand For Something tour at Corporation, with The Wytches headlining.

When The Wytches played The Harley last year I was told by more than one person that I should make sure to see them live at some point. A year on and I managed to catch them at Corp, where they displayed their enchanting blend of punk, garage and surf (with plenty of brooding undertones). It all starts to feel pretty otherworldly and psychedelic, yet I wished they’d pushed this element even further when I saw them. Psych bands excel when they create a special vibe that doesn’t let up for the whole performance, and this didn’t quite happen here… Maybe it was the song choices and the stop-start nature of the set, and there was minimal crowd interaction. Plus there was no encore, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the venue’s decision.

Listening to The Wytches’ debut, Annabel Dream Reader, it flows perfectly as an album and takes you on a musical trip, but this performance didn’t quite live up to my, admittedly high, expectations. Don’t get me wrong though – this is a band that has plenty of catchy songs and still manages to stand out from the indie crowd. I’m sure they’ve got a lot more to offer as well, and I eagerly anticipate their next full length.
