Zara’s

It’s often said, the best places are the most unassuming. Zara’s is a point in case.

Based at the forefront of the Crookes run, slap bang next door to The Punchbowl pub, from the outside it looks like a pretty nice place. Get inside though and, crikey, it’s a sight to behold.

There’s no smoke and mirrors here - this is an Indian restaurant that ticks all the boxes.

 

The Food

We start the only way you should, with poppadums, and they arrive with a wonderfully presented array of sauces; four standard, four house specials (you won’t get the latter as a general rule but, be nice, and they might just treat you).

Next up, Kakra Chop (minced crab meat mixed with onions, mashed potato and aromatic spices) and King Prawn Bhaji Puree. Both arrive in ‘edible bowls’  and are flawless.

For the mains, we go for Zara’s Special (which more than lives up to its name) and the Chicken Biryani. Presentation is of the highest order and on the taste front both dishes deliver by the bucket load. A delicious Kashmeri Nan (Chillies & Onions) and pilau rice complete the feast.

 

The Verdict

As a curry connoisseur, I’ve been to most establishments across the city. Zara’s was a genuine surprise in the nicest of ways. Lovely looking, impeccable food (with an exciting menu containing dishes you won’t find anywhere else), and staff who are both friendly and professional.
Once you find a good Indian, you tend to stick with it. Be adventurous and give this place a shot. Chances are it’ll become your new favourite.

Example Menu

Starter: Paneer Mushroom Puree Homemade cheese, cooked with mushrooms. Served in a Puree.

Main: Nizami Gosht A fairly hot stew dish, prepared with chunks of grilled lamb, gently simmered in a yoghurt and tamarind sauce. A superb lamb dish with plenty of strong flavours.
