The Wig & Pen by The Milestone

The Wig & Pen by The Milestone on Campo Lane is undoubtedly one of the most attractive new destinations in the city.

Owner Marc Sheldon said he jumped at the chance to take on the venue when it surprisingly became available. “It provides the perfect opportunity to offer finer pub food in a more central city location that is surrounded by office workers looking for a good place for a business lunch or another evening eating and drinking option,” he explained.

It’s an exciting new chapter in The Milestone story – which so far has made for cracking reading. Never ones to take the easy route, they launched their latest venture on ‘Mad Friday’ in December 2010.

Of course, this was on the back of them winning Best British Restaurant on Gordon Ramsay’s Best Restaurant TV show, where Marc and head chef Simon did the city proud.

“We couldn’t have done all this without the Gordon Ramsay connection,” continues Marc. “It was an incredible experience - utterly nerve wracking and the pressure was immense. Looking back on it though, it was a fantastic achievement, and the support we had from everyone in Sheffield was mind-blowing.”

“We’d been looking at expanding for a while,” adds Simon, the man behind the dishes which blew Ramsay away. “But it had to be right on every level. It’s about building on what we’ve achieved at The Milestone but not taking anything away from that – that’s why we’ve got a new team here who are all as passionate as we are about making it work. Everyone works hard and everyone supports one another.”

The Wig & Pen site, as you’d imagine, stays true to The Milestone’s ethos of using fresh local produce, experimentation, and top quality service across the board.

It’s more restaurant than gastro-pub, offering city slick food in a very relaxed, upmarket environment - with far more scope for creativity.

“I’ve got a huge kitchen to work in here,” adds Simon. “With all the toys I could wish for. I spend at least two afternoons a week just tinkering with new dishes. I work closely with the bar staff too. They’re passionate about cocktails so they’re always trying new things and asking me about ingredients which might work in new creations. I created a rosehip and vanilla syrup for Valentine’s Day which was used in both a dessert and a drink.”

They’ve also invested in an in-house sommelier who is helping them build their selection of wines and match them to people’s palettes – with regular wine events taking place.

“We’ve got wines from South America on March 9 and an introduction to wine tasting taking place on March 22, “says Marc. “We’re hoping to offer the biggest selection of wines in Sheffield in the near future and have even bought our own vineyard in Spain.”

It’s clear they know what they’re doing. It’s also clear they’ll never rest on their laurels. Plans are currently in place for a further development in the Kelham Island area for a separate cookery school/deli. It appears that Sheffield public is set to continue its love affair with The Milestone.
