The Lescar
The Place
For many, The Lescar is a home from home. The unpretentious watering hole is as comforting as it is forward thinking. They never rest on their laurels here… but you also get the impression that they don’t need to try too hard either.
It’s testament to the staff that it all seems quite effortless. Based in Sharrow Vale, just off Eccy Rd, it offers a traditional fascia – but behind those walls lie wonders such as the Little Last Laugh comedy club, live jazz, acoustic acts and regular DJs – not to mention a cracking array of drinks and much talked about ‘pub grub’.
The Food
To kick off, we share a starter of crab and wasabi cakes with mango chutney. You get three of the beautiful blighters and they pack just the right amount of punch. To be honest, we could’ve (and should’ve) gone for another round of them.
Next up, the mains, so it’s breaded chicken breast for my cohort and slow cooked pork belly for myself. The former is sumptuously topped with Serrano ham, barbecue sauce and cheddar and served with chips. The latter, meanwhile, arrives cooked perfectly with delicious bacon and sage mash, sautéed leeks and mustard gravy. Each flavour compliments the next fantastically well. A real triumph.
To finish, a sharing dessert platter of lemon tart, mascarpone cheese cake, chocolate brownie and vanilla ice cream. Lovely stuff – with particular praise reserved for the brownie.
The Verdict
The Lescar certainly isn’t the cheapest pub you’ll ever eat in. You do, however, get what you pay for – and there are few of its contemporaries which can offer the same quality. With so much else going on here, it’d be easy to forget about the food. But that would be a massive mistake.
