The Earl (formerly Earl of Arundel & Surrey)
The Earl is one of those places that’s had more owners and facelifts than I’ve had West Indian dinners, but at least the latest incumbents have got the place rocking again. It’s a far more stylish destination than it once was, that’s for sure, but still manages to maintain a homely, traditional pub feel.
The Food
We’re here to check out Scubels Caribbean Kitchen, surely some of the most authentic Jamaican food you’ll find in Sheffield.
We’re given a bit of everything to try to get us acquainted with the entire menu (now that’s how I like to try my food), kicking off with a traditional Caribbean vegetable soup, which definitely contains some vegetables I’d never heard of, let alone eaten before.
Then the mega mix arrives - showcasing the likes of curried goat, fried chicken, saltfish, lamb chops alongside rice and peas, dumplings and plantin. Masie, head chef and in house auntie, takes the reins in the kitchen - adapting the menu ever so slightly each week.
You’ll get a main dish for £5.50, no matter what you choose, while puddings are a measly £1.50. But before you all rush down, she’s only on site once a week, on Fridays between 12pm and 7pm. Still, it’s well worth waiting for.
The Verdict
Ever since holidaying in Barbados, Caribbean food has brought back fond memories for this particular foodie, so Masie was always onto a winner with me.
Those who don’t like to experiment too much may need a little coaxing but trust me, you’ll be well rewarded. For the rest of us, who like our food to be packed with flavour and as Caribbean as a Viv Richards cover drive, then it’s time once again to thank God it’s Friday.
