Saffron Club
Sharing a doorway with popular Chinese eatery Hui Wei, The Saffron Club is situated at the start of the West St run. The choice here is simple; classic or contemporary – meaning you can stick with the tried and tested Bhuna or be a little more adventurous by seeking out their cutting edge cuisine. The venue itself echoes their ethos – a vibrant and modern setting with subtle nods towards the roots of Indian culture.
The Food
We’re escorted to the small bar area where we’re handed both a food and drinks menu as our table is readied – giving us ample time to soak up the atmosphere and selection on offer.
Owner Naz is, frankly, one of the nicest people you’ll meet and I inform him he’s in for a challenge tonight - as my partner has something of a delicate palette.
It’s a challenge he relishes and begins to reel off a host of options. Orders placed, we’re seated, and it isn’t long before our appetisers arrive. I start with the Masala Murgh K’leeja (Chicken liver flame fried with spices) which is richly flavoured and downright delicious.
Just watch out for the odd cheeky chilli throwing you a curveball from time to time. Meanwhile, my partner goes with Naz’s recommendation of Aloo Palak Tikki - Potato cakes with a spinach and cheese filling.
A smile reveals it was a good recommendation. For the main event, we opt for La’jawaab Murgh (Chicken Tikka cooked with coconut and ground almond in a rich ghee and tomato sauce), a mild and sweet dish which will convert even the most hardened curry critic and Haddi Shatkora (Lamb shank slow cooked with dried citrus macroptera in medium spices) – a tasty and tender twist on something of an English classic.
Saffron Chawal (Basmalti rice braised with whole spices and Saffron) and Lassani Naan (Naan with garlic) complete the feast.
The Verdict
Be you a classic or contemporary person, The Saffron Club is at the very top of its game on both counts. This, combined with impeccable service and a strong focus on customer satisfaction, make it a joy to dine here. Even for those with delicate palettes.
