The Place

The Prince of Wales has always had a superb location – jutting out of the junction where Ecclesall Road meets Carterknowle Road – and following a high class refurb at the end of last year – it now has the pub to match.

Always a popular choice with locals, the new look venue is now more contemporary with greater emphasis on the restaurant, featuring an open kitchen, hessian carpets, taupe coloured walls and even, if you’re sat in at the front, wolfskin-backed chairs.

The Food

The décor isn’t the only thing to have been given an overhaul, the menu has also undergone a substantial lick of paint. This is no longer your typical Ember Inns menu by any stretch.

Among the starters we sampled were a sensational scallop dish and some succulent prawns with rocket, garlic aioli and rustic bread. When it came to the mains, I couldn’t see past the Ribeye steak which came with roasted balsamic shallots, frites and a bearnaise sauce (£16.55). It was tasty, tender and the perfect portion size.

My guests went for the Cod wrapped in ham on lentils, potatoes and asparagus, another steak and a real POW signature dish – the roasted rack of Lamb, mini shephereds pie with carrots and cumin.

The dessert selection was just as intriguing and the highlight was again my choice; the malted milk panacotta which came with a poached pear and chocolate sauce and had a beautiful blend of flavours, as well as the perfect wobble.

The Verdict

Yes, the food prices have gone up at the Prince of Wales but so has the standard of cooking so don’t let that put you off. The food, atmosphere and service are top restaurant quality – and best of all – you can still get a decent pint. Excellent.
